Two Fantastic Short Stories at JMWW and Short Story Long
Some Short Story Beauties
A benefit of my friendship (whether or not you enjoy said benefit) is that I send work I love to friends. And sometimes I share it here, especially if I know I want to reread it. So here you go.
I was moved by this story in Short Story Long. Michael O’Brien has written something so open and tender that it’s almost terrifying. The structure is fascinating. As a writer, I read certain stories and ask myself how the writer DID that. This is one of those. It’s the story of a marriage that might not make it told in snippets of thoughts, fears, words unsaid, and what is spoken. It’s haunting.

And Another One
Another beauty in JMWW. The cardigan. The kiss. So breathtakingly real. Richard Boe has captured a father’s day with his daughter using details that hardly ever dip below the surface into thought, because these details reveal everything. Masterful.
This is the last weekend before school starts. I’m looking forward to having my days to myself, but I’m going to miss seeing my grandson on the daily.

End of Summer
I take care of one of my grandkids each summer, which is fun and also keeps me busy. I don’t have much time to write, but I always find time to read. So I offer you two pieces I loved reading. This is some summer nonfiction for you.
This short piece by Casey Jo Graham Welmers concerns rocks, grief, and reality. And it’s fantastic.
The next one is a long and thoughtful look at “the third thing” and its role in a successful relationship. You have to settle in for this one, and take your time. I would like make the generalization that male writers are more comfortable than female writers with asking us to do that, to listen to every last word they have to say on a subject. But of course that would be sexist of me, now, wouldn’t it? Still, this piece by poet Donald Hall is worth the time and concentration.
